How to know if you’re ready to start your beauty brand

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have your own cosmetics line? Maybe you’ve dreamed about creating a lipstick collection or an entire line that stands for something. But the problem is, you don’t know how to get started or if you’re ready. I’m going to help you determine how to know if you are ready to start your beauty brand.

As you know, makeup is my life. I love makeup. I buy makeup. I’m a makeup artist. I get excited about product launches. I collect makeup books. I teach makeup. I write about makeup. Yes, for me, I’m all things makeup. You’re probably wondering if I have my own brand. The answer is no. Although, I do have an interest in having my own line and earlier in my career, I added my name to private label cosmetics to have products to offer when teaching classes or working with brides. That lasted about 5 years, and for some reason I stopped.

I’ve been thinking about launching a collection of lip colors. The collection will be called “JKL Beauty” after my children James, Kiki and Lorrie. The lip colors will be hydrating, highly pigmented and timeless. There are more details, I may reveal at another time.

Anyway, today I had the pleasure of watching a webinar produced by The Makeup Show, featuring  Danessa Myricks and Nils Johnson, hosted by Shelly Taggar titled, “How To Jump Start Your Beauty Brand”. The presentation was very informative and extremely helpful. The topics covered is what anyone who is looking to start or launch a brand needs to hear.

I loved that the information is relevant. It was 25 years ago, when I was marketing my private label line and although the process may be similar, their are better ways to figure out if you are ready to create a brand and what it takes to launch and introduce to the world.

My interest in cosmetic brand development began early in my career. Catherine Hinds, of the Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics and Catherine Hinds Company was my mentor. She taught me about running a salon and creating products.  Back then I learned how to make skin care products and one of my favorites was the Honey Almond Scrub. I was also introduced to Private Label Cosmetics as an alternative to other brands to carry in my salon.
