Most makeup artists have heard of Kevyn Aucoin. After all, he was an amazing makeup artist who’s talent and skills were beyond his years. Kevyn also left behind a legacy of books and a brand that keeps us connected. But who inspired him?
Way Bandy, was a makeup artist that many artists today don’t know. But, Way Bandy, was a legend and and icon in the world of makeup. As a matter of fact, he has often been cited to be one of the first well known makeup artists. His flawless techniques and signature style made him one of the most sought after makeup artists in the world.
A painter turned makeup artist, Bandy’s makeup career started in New York in 1966 as a makeup instructor and skin care specialist. 1969 he became the salon director for Charles of the Ritz until 1971 when he decided to become a freelance makeup artist and consultant to brands.
He loved to mix colors in the same way he did oil paints. As a child he painted his versions of Hollywood stars to look as he reimagined.
“He works like an artist. He mixes colors in the palm of his hand like a painter with a palette.” – Elizabeth Taylor
Bandy worked with some of the most highly regarded faces in the 70’s. Elizabeth Taylor, Racquel Welsh, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross and Cher were some of those famous faces. His work graced the pages of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
In 1977, Way Bandy released his book, Designing Your Face which expressed his unique and revolutionary approach to makeup. His book was filled with detailed instructions for mixing and application.

What makes somebody legendary is of course the influence that their work has on others. Bandy clearly had much influence. This man appears to have achieved much in a life that was tragically cut short. What is the one thing that you think sets him apart from all other make up artists? Thanks for sharing this interesting article about such a talented individual.
Hi Ray, thanks for your comment.
What sets Way Bandy apart from other makeup artists is that he was an artist first. He understood color, light and undertones of the skin. He also mixed his products instead of using them as is from a store. He loved to educate and was not afraid to share his techniques. That is something many creatives do not do.
I am delighted that you enjoyed the post.
Thank you.
This is a very interesting topic. It is always great to learn about the people behind the trend. Way Bandy was certain a great make-up artist. Like many today, I really do not know him but the fact that he was a painter turned make-up artist is very inspiring. Now I know the person behind the great faces of people whom I do know of like Liz Taylor, Diana Ross, and many others you mentioned. The site is neat and easy to navigate. Continue to make your presence known online and I am sure that many people will be fascinated with this piece of history just like I am.
