In the 1950’s a successful model, Arlene Hawkins launched Arlene Hawkins Cosmetics.
There is little information about this successful model and business woman, except to know that her brand prospered for many years. As a matter of fact, it was so successful the November 1975 issue of Black Enterprise Magazine included an article on the Black Beauty Industry naming Arlene Hawkins Cosmetics as “one of the most ambitious and prosperous black owned firms.”
“I am an example of what is possible when girls from the very beginning of their lives are loved and nurtured by people around them. I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life who taught me about quiet strength and dignity.” — Michelle Obama
At the time the Black Enterprise article was published, it gave us an insight on the skills and services offered by Ms. Hawkins. In addition to being a successful model, she was a makeup artist and beauty consultant with a strong interest in skin care. She sold skin care and makeup and was working on a line for men.
Arlene Hawkins Cosmetics and Salon was located in NYC.
