What is blogging?
Blogging is a marketing and writing tool that can be used for many different things.
Here are some reasons people blog
- To talk about how you feel about the world
- To share your thoughts on a topic
- To give yourself personal accountability as you work toward a goal
- To teach others
- To share experiences
- As a diary of your journeys
- To market your services
- To promote products
- To make money
As a makeup artist, I have had a blog off and on through the years. There have been times that I have been very consistent with creating content and other times, that I have simply dropped the ball by being busy doing other things.
More recently, I decided to launch my blog after dwelling on the idea for a while. Blogs can be great for new and experienced makeup artists and creatives for many different reasons. Here are they ways I feel a blog could be a useful tool.
A blog allows you to tell the world who you are as an artist.
We all have goals and dreams of the type of artist we want to be. Whether you are starting out or have experience, you can use your blog to talk about the things that inspire you. Inspiration comes from many things, it can be an experience, discovery, photo or even a conversation. How we interpret those experiences and discoveries different for each of us.
A blog can help you express the type of work you want to do.
I have met many artists over the years that want to do more with their careers, but don’t have the experience in that area. Using your blog to talk about concepts you want to work on. To share mood board on upcoming collaboration projects and to share images behind the scenes is a great way to show of your hidden talents.
A blog can be a platform you use to give help others.
If one of your goals is to teach or educate, you can create posts that help others learn and grow. Use the platform to talk about things you are really good at. Share step by step tutorials. Answer popular questions. Share information you’ve acquired.
A blog can be used to give product information
As a makeup artist we all use products. Our kit is filled with many different products that we use on set. Using your blog to share not only the products but how to use them is so helpful. Don’t assume that because you mention a product that your readers know what it is or how to use it. This is where you come in to give that type of valuable information.
A blog can be used to share experiences.
What was it like the first time you got your paying gig? How fun was it to work on your last project? What challenges did you overcome that could help a fellow artist? What’s educational class did you participate in and what was it like? As you can see, I provided a few examples, but I’m sure there are many others that came to mind that you can share.
A blog can invite others into a bit of your personal life.
When you write a post that includes something about you or your family, you are bringing your readers closer to you. Your blog is a great way to do this by sharing fun events like a vacation. Here you can post images that you may not share elsewhere to connect with your audience on a deeper level.
A blog can help you with organization.
With every blog post, there is a beginning, middle and end. When you write you are organizing your thoughts and content in a sequence that is easy to follow. This helps in other things in life too, you will find that you may tend to be more methodical in organizing your kit, your to do list and other areas of your life.
A blog can help you with writing and communication.
The way we communicate today is so different in how we communicated even five years ago. The growth of technology has allowed us to shorten words, create acronyms and chat via text. A blog helps you improve writing, communication and grammar. This is so important because when you have to sit down to write a letter or email, you’re doing it in the correct format, spelling and grammar. These are skills we must continue to enhance, especially as we continue to grow in our careers and become the CEO of our lives.
A blog can help you make money.
There are many ways to make money these days and having a blog is no exception. If set up correctly, your blog can help you make money by creating your own products and/or affiliate marketing. You can share links within your blog for people to check out and buy the products you are recommending and you get paid when someone buys something. It can be a great income stream but to do it well you have to figure out what, and how to market the products and services that will be best for you and your business.
A blog can help you get recognition.
A well written, successful blog can help you get noticed by brands and media. Your content can be the perfect niche to be asked to talk about. It could lead to guest blogging, personal appearances, brand promotions and collaborations.
You must do the following to have a successful blog
- create a niche with related topics
- post consistently
- add relevant photos
- share your blog on social media
- have a signup form to share new posts with your audience
- be authentic
- engage with your audience
